I spent 30 years with my late husband growing meat and vegetables for our use and sale on our organic farm in Winlaw. In 2006, my dear husband died of a brain tumour and I sold the farm and moved to Nelson in August 2007. I bought a house in Fairview with quite a nice piece of land around the house and hired a strong young man to dig up the front lawn and I planted my first garden last spring in that plot as well as in the back yard, which I tilled up with my Troy Bilt Pony. Of course, I can't grow nearly as much as I could in my 3 gardens in Winlaw, and I have to buy the inputs, especially manure, that I had in my barn on the farm. Plus I only have a small composter here and need to build lots more to get enough compost for my gardens. This year, I have neighbours using the other side of my front lawn for their garden, so we are now working together for more vegetables and less lawn. We're also going to raise chickens, and are working to make that a legal practice for anyone in Nelson who wants to do that, too.
I am 63 and living on a pension, and I welcome help with my gardens, and also thank Paul for his help with my chicken house, and Valerie for securing the manure.
